WHERE TO SEE BIOLUMINESCENCE IN CALIFORNIA

Let’s start with WHAT bioluminescence is.

Bioluminescence is the production and emission of light by living organisms. In the ocean, this glow is typically produced by planktonic organisms known as dinoflagellates. When these tiny organisms are disturbed by movement in the water, such as waves, swimming beings, or watercrafts, they produce a glowing effect. The light produced can range from barely visible to vibrant blue or green and is a result of a chemical reaction within the organism. It’s such a cool phenomenon to witness!

Have you seen bioluminescence in real life? Where did you see it? I’ve been fortunate to see it in Elkhorn Slough, Tomales Bay and Baja Mexico.

Photos gathered from google. Unfortunately, I don’t have camera gear that is capable of capturing this phenomenon.
